Why did I start debating?

When I was a freshman like probably most of the readers of this blog are, I didn’t plan to commit to debating this much. I used to do English debate in a different style when I was in High School and wanted to keep on studying English, but as you know, there are bunch of International clubs and communities here at Keio University. So I decided to take a look at various clubs which does International activities and study English and KDS just happened to be one of it.

Why did I decide to commit to it?

The good part about KDS is that there is various way of committing to it. There are students who debate almost every day and go to bunch of tournaments, students who debate once a week, exchange students who debate for only one semester. When I honestly told the seniors that I’m still wondering how much I want to commit, they told me not to worry and just see how you’ll feel as days go by. So I decided to go to Elizabeth Cup (the very first tournament for freshman) and choose whether or not I continue this club after the tournament.

Conclusion first, every practices and rounds were just so much fun. With the massive support of my seniors and friends, I could realize how much fun this activity is. Every round opened up a gate towards a new world to me, making me realize how much the society has controversial issues left for us to debate. I was definitely nervous, but could also feel the passion and excitement swirling inside me when I stand in front of the audience and construct my one and only speech. That’s when I decided to commit more to debating, to know the world with actually enjoying it.

How did I change after joining KDS?

I definitely gained more concerns to the society and what’s going on, and always tried to have different scopes when any issue came up to the table. I also think my English improved a lot (yes this blog is the result of my improved English…trust me it really did got better!!!). And really cheesy and so typical, but I made tons of fantastic friends. KDS has become my home and whenever I hang out with my friends, senpais, kohais, I seem to always be laughing and enjoying my life.

KDS is where you can actually have your friendship goals and also study hard. Can’t wait to see you all❤️!!
